History of Santorini:
The first known human presence on the island of Santorini dates all the way back to the Neolithic Period. Around 1,500 B.C., before it was named Santorini, the island was referred to as Strongili, which means "round" in Greek. In the 13th century, the Phoenicians named the city Calliste, which means "most beautiful". Again in 1579, its name was changed to Dermetzik (small mill) by the Turks who invaded the island. In 1832, the Greeks pushed back against the Ottoman Empire and gained their independence, then reclaiming the Greek name Thera for the city, though Santorini is used colloquially. Santorini was hit by a massive volcanic eruption that is thought to have destroyed the Minoan civilization. The eruption created such enormous waves, the center sank and created a caldera. Civilization began to leave the island after the earthquake in 1956, and the tourist attraction really picked up in the '70s.
